Fact: I get up at least an hour earlier than I need to every morning. More often two hours. Sometimes three. I do this by choice, completely voluntarily. And I don’t do it because I’m super busy and need to do a million things before leaving for the office. I don’t have kids lunches to pack or animals to take care of or a whole house to clean or so much work I need to do some BEFORE work. Nope, I get up early because I have chosen to be a morning person. And it’s fantastic.
I wasn’t always the type who got up early just because they enjoyed the morning. Actually, for the first 24 years of my life I slept in as often as possible. Like till noon. Every. Day. That. I. Could. So why the change? Oddly enough, it was because I stopped working a 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. job. When I started working at 11 a.m. I decided I wouldn’t use those precious hours before work to sleep, and would instead wake up as early as possible to make the most of my time. After all, I wouldn’t have a ton of of it when I got home.
So, I started getting up at 9 a.m. Then 8 a.m. Hell, sometimes I would get up at 7 a.m. HECK, every now and then I threw in a 6 a.m. just to spice things up. Kinda, crazy face right? Now I start work at 1:30 p.m. and work till 11 p.m., so I’ve settled on a 8:30 – 9 a.m. wake-up time and that works for me.
What do I do with all this time if I’m not exercising (ha!) or paying bills or taking care of a little one? Uh, pretty much nothing. And it’s fabulous. Every now and then I wake up early enough that I can kiss Ethan goodbye before he leaves. Most the time I don’t, because that boy has class EARLY. Then I make breakfast. An actual breakfast that I cook and everything. And I dance around the apartment while breakfast is cooking. And I call my grandma who lives in Virginia (cause that conversation always last AT LEAST an hour, bless her heart).
Then, I decorate my day planner like a nerd. I watch a show I’ve already seen 80 million times on Netflix. I cycle through them, but I have about five. Right now it’s Gilmore Girls cause the revival is coming up. Most the time it’s Charmed cause, again, nerd. And then I write for my own personal enjoyment, because I spend so much of the day writing about other things going on the world.
Now, I understand some people don’t have the ability to be a morning person by choice. But, if you can, I highly recommend it. You go into the office or start your day in the world much more relaxed. When you’ve had time to do whatever you want (for me, that’s nothing) for at least an hour every day, you’ll be amazed with how much stress it takes off you. Mmm, Netflix and coffee in the morning.
