The end of summer is crawling toward us faster than anyone would like to admit, and so with it comes the end of vacation season. But you know what? I think Ethan and I used up our vacation time wisely so I am okay with that. Let me explain.
At the end of May, after finishing his first year of law school, Ethan decided to take a road trip to Houston, Texas. Why Houston? Because that is where the Rothko Chapel resides. What’s the Rothko Chapel? It’s a non-denominational chapel that is not just a chapel, but also a major work of modern art created whose walls hold fourteen paintings by Mark Rothko. Ethan’s favorite artist is Mark Rothko. And now you’re up to speed.
So he said “Honey I wanna road trip to Houston.” I said, “Okay, have fun.” And he drove to Houston and back in a week.
Now I didn’t go on this road trip (though I did Instagram the whole thing for him by proxy—mainly all the barbecue he ate). The reason for this was twofold: 1) I had work 2) He really wanted to go alone. The point of the road trip was for him to be able to clear his head and relieve himself of all that stress that had accumulated over his 1L year. And I totally got that.
As far as our shared vacation time went we took a trip to San Francisco over the 4th of July weekend between when I ended my old job and started my new one. That trip was amazing and filled with some of the most delicious food and sightseeing destinations I’ve encountered since studying abroad. Ya, that’s how much I liked San Francisco.
But Ethan’s road trip still has me thinking. I love traditional vacations and I’ve travelled to so many places in my 24 years on this earth. But I haven’t ever done a proper road trip.
So now that has been added to my bucket list. I don’t know if I would do it alone like Ethan. I’m not great at being alone and I think I’d have a Tom Hanks in “Castaway” situation going on pretty quickly with some inanimate object in the car. So maybe I will wait until Ethan and I can do one together.
In the meantime I have been thinking of destinations I would like to road trip to. Right now New Orleans is at the top of my list. I have never been before and I think it would be a great place to go in the fall.
But who knows where the road will lead.1
